Title: Phoenix

 

Description: As part of the Sun series, this work was made after a series of devastating summer fires around Cape Town. My son told me he hadn't seen the sun for three days through the smoke. People's lives were disrupted by the fire and fear as homes were evacuated and forests destroyed.

However fire is also cleansing ,so I knew that life would emerge again from the blackened ruins and terrifying beauty of the flames.

Materials: Hand dyed and commercial cotton, silk, brocade,  taffeta, cotton and metallic thread.  

 

Machine appliquéd, and quilted.
